Skyspace Lech at the Arlberg

Art by James Ruell in the alpine landscape of the Arlbergs

With skyspaceLech, the renowned holiday destination Lech in Vorarlberg offers an exceptional attraction for art enthusiasts. Since summer 2018, visitors have been able to view the sky from a new perspective inside skyspaceLech. This walk-in art installation by internationally acclaimed American artist James Turrell, located on the Tannegg in Oberlech, invites guests to pause and marvel amidst a breathtaking mountain panorama. James Turrell visited Lech in September 2014 at the invitation of the “Horizon Field” association. He was deeply impressed by the high-alpine landscape and the site at Tannegg. Shortly after returning to his home in Flagstaff, Arizona, he began developing the concept for skyspaceLech.

A work of art in harmony with nature

At first glance, the structure blends inconspicuously into the alpine landscape. Like a low cylinder, it rises gently from the ground. A tunnel leads visitors into the mostly underground, oval-shaped main chamber (9 by 6 by 5.2 meters). Through an oval opening in the ceiling, guests can gaze directly into the sky above Lech. A bench invites visitors to sit and take in the view. After dusk, a light installation bathes the walls and ceiling in shifting colors. The ceiling opening can be covered by a movable dome that is illuminated with special light effects, creating a fascinating interplay of color and atmosphere.

Unique panoramic view from the Tannegg hill

You can reach skyspaceLech via the public hiking trail. A small path branches off and leads along the eastern side of the Tannegg hill to the tunnel entrance. James Turrell deliberately chose this location for his artwork: the surrounding panorama is truly awe-inspiring, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and a direct line of sight from Bürstegg to the striking peak of the Biberkopf.
